WASHINGTON– Propecia, the world’s leading hair loss treatment, faces legal challenges over its use in a class of medications known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors.
The drug, which was developed by Merck & Co., has been linked to dangerous side effects, including liver problems and heart-related issues. It was discovered in 2015 by former Propecia employees who developed severe skin rashes and other problems that were linked to the drug’s use. The lawsuits filed in federal court in New York state have brought the company’s lawsuits to the attention of federal prosecutors and the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) of the U. S. District Court in New York. The suit was filed in September in the Eastern District of New York against the Merck Co. of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, and Santa Monica, Calif., alleging that the company illegally promoted the drug for hair loss.
The lawsuit is brought on behalf of patients who have been diagnosed with hair loss and suffered severe skin rashes after taking Propecia. The lawsuits claim that the use of Propecia in the medication has caused severe skin rashes in their skin, a condition known as androgenetic alopecia, which causes thinning hair and loss of hair. The lawsuit alleges that the drug’s side effects led to patients who developed skin rashes that were not adequately controlled by the drug.
In addition to the Merck lawsuit, the plaintiffs in the drug litigation, including the company’s senior vice president, C. Brent Saunders, filed a separate civil action against Merck and the drug’s manufacturer, Warner-Lambert, in April 2016.

The drug’s manufacturer, Merck & Co., of Philadelphia, PA, is now pursuing the lawsuits against the company. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in New York State.
The plaintiff, Dr. Lisa Heyd, said in her July 2016 deposition that she had experienced severe skin rashes after taking Propecia. She had developed a rash on her face, arms and neck that started in March 2016. At that time, the rash was “very severe and very bad,” she said. “I would definitely recommend anybody with a dermatology history to stop taking the medication.”
Dr. Heyd said she had consulted with a dermatologist who confirmed that she had a severe skin rash and also had a history of having problems with hair loss, including on her face and throat. The dermatologist said that the skin rashes were the result of Propecia’s skin-related problems. He added that the rash had caused her to be in a “dangerous situation” and had caused severe damage to her skin.
“Dr. Heyd has been diagnosed with a severe skin rash and has been taking Propecia for the last two years,” said Dr. Heyd, who said she was unaware of the side effects of the drug before beginning treatment. “I was just so surprised by her reaction to this drug. She had a pretty good skin rash.”
